February 11, 2018, Faith In practice 560 Inglesby team 1:

Today was a spectacular day. We open the endoscopy clinic at Las Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro in Antigua. With the help of a terrific staff including two technicians, two translators, an anesthesiologist and very patient patients, we were able to inaugurate the G.I. clinic successfully. We did several endoscopic procedures/biopsies and managed the patients without incident.

One patient was remarkable. She was an elderly female who presented with severe nausea, epigastric pain and appeared to be in significant distress. Upper endoscopy was completed. She had a pair of small gastric ulcers likely due to her arthritis medicine. In the recovery area, she was completely relaxed and essentially all of her presenting symptoms were gone. In retrospect she was absolutely frightened at the prospect of an endoscopic procedure. We were all most grateful to see her so happy in the recovery area. Big work tomorrow.
