Day 2 – Feb 8
The morning was chilly with temperatures in the high 40s. The team enjoyed breakfast and a devotional led by Dr. Granberry in which he spoke about what it means to Love and asked us to reflect on our reason for being here this week.
A few thought starters for the week shared by Dr. Granberry included:
- The word Caritas is Latin for “unconditional love” as well as for “charity”. If asked why most of us are here this week, we’d probably say something along the lines of “because we want to do charity work” or “to do something for others.” This is also a way that we show love for one another.
C.S. Lewis wrote a lot about love and christianity. To summarize, he says that Love makes us vulnerable to suffer and loss, but avoiding this love in the name of safety is a path to hell.
Love begins with turning our attention to another person.
“We are not called to do great things, but little things with great love.” – Mother Theresa - We then headed to the hospital, Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro, for a hospital orientation and to kick off a day of unpacking and preparations for the week ahead.
This week, we will have 6 operating rooms running for 6 different specialties: Hips, Knees, Spinal, Trauma, Foot/Ankle, and Sports Medicine. We screened patients in the clinic to review vitals, confirm their readiness, and set a date for their surgeries. The anesthesia teams developed care plans for each patient. The OR and Zimmer teams unpacked, cleaned and prepped our instruments needed for the week ahead.
In addition to surgery preparations, our Mobility Clinic was kicked off with 30+ wheelchairs being assembled and provided to patients in need.
To celebrate an eventful day, we held a Super Bowl party back at the hotel.
