Day 3-Mirelez Team
May 4, 2025 – Guatemala

We began our day in the best way possible—with a morning devotion led by our trip pastor, Jimmy. He read from Mark 2:17, reminding us that Jesus is the Great Physician, bringing healing not only to physical ailments but to the brokenness of the soul. A powerful start that grounded us in purpose.

Upon arriving at the hospital, we saw patients already waiting, hopeful for the help they had traveled so far to receive. After completing our official hospital orientation, our entire team gathered outside to pray with the patients. What happened next was deeply moving: as we prayed for them, they prayed for us. The moment was humbling and emotional—many of us were brought to tears.

Though the mobility clinic was not scheduled to begin until noon, our team jumped into action early after seeing the number of patients waiting. Wheelchair assembly began immediately. Several patients had traveled for hours—or even days—by any means necessary. One man came in using a tree branch as a crutch, his leg severely damaged from a car accident. Another had been unable to walk for four months due to prostate complications and was carried in by his family. A woman battling uterine cancer shared that she had fallen more than a year ago, weakened by her illness and still without relief.

Stories like these are not rare here. Many patients suffer from multiple conditions, yet still make the journey in hopes of some relief. By the end of the day, our mobility team had assembled and fitted 35 wheelchairs. Even so, one team member commented, “It still doesn’t feel like enough.” Their dedication is inspiring.

Meanwhile, the surgical teams were hard at work preparing for the week ahead. Circulators, scrub techs, and our pharmacist began stocking and organizing OR rooms. New team members got acquainted with their spaces to ensure smooth operations when surgeries begin tomorrow.

Triage was busy as well. Our surgeons conducted consultations to assess patients and determine surgical candidates. Once cleared, patients met with the CRNAs and anesthesiologists for pre-op evaluations, additional studies if needed, and instructions for pre- and post-op care. Some patients were excited, others understandably nervous—but all were incredibly grateful.

Outside the hospital, joy filled the air as children played freely. Nancy, one of our volunteers, handed out bubble wands, frisbees, and small gifts. The children’s laughter and smiles reminded us that healing isn’t just for the body—it’s for the spirit too.

We are so proud of our team. Each person stepped up, filled in wherever needed, and worked together to prepare for the impactful week ahead. Surgeries begin tomorrow, and we are ready.

Please continue to keep our team and the patients in your prayers.
