Day 5 – Mirelez Team
May 6, 2025 – Retalhuleu, Guatemala

It’s another blessed and purpose-filled day here in Retalhuleu. The morning began with a devotional centered around the parable of the Good Samaritan in the book of Luke, reminding us of the power and importance of compassion. The message closed with a reflection on 1 John 3:18:
“Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
With those words in our hearts, we loaded onto the bus, ready to turn that love into action.

Upon arriving at the hospital, the team dispersed to their assigned areas. Morning rounds began with prayer over each patient, followed by a swift and steady start to surgeries—four completed quickly and efficiently in the early part of the day.

One of the most moving moments today came during the case of a 25-year-old woman with mental disabilities who was scheduled for a hernia repair. Weighing only 83 pounds, non-verbal, and clearly frightened by the unfamiliar environment, she was visibly distressed. In an incredibly compassionate act, her anesthesiologist wrapped her in a blanket, cradled her gently, and carried her to the OR, softly rocking her to sleep. It was a powerful reminder of the tenderness that often defines true healing.

Another standout case involved a 66-year-old man who had lost a kidney in 2019 and suffered nerve damage, resulting in a severe abdominal hernia and a large, unsightly scar stretching from his back to his front. Our surgical team was able to repair the hernia, reduce the protrusion, and revise the scar to significantly improve both his health and appearance. Though the doctor explained to the patient’s daughter that her father’s abdomen would always be asymmetrical, she was deeply grateful and full of thanks for the care provided.
However, not all moments were easy. Our GYN surgeon, Dr. Dunham, had to deliver potentially life-altering news to a 56-year-old woman—she may have cervical cancer. Our translator Ivanna bravely stood by the patient, holding her composure even while internally shaken. Together with her brother Hector and Pastor Jimmy, they gathered in prayer over the woman, who—herself a pastor—received the news with faith and grace.

In small but meaningful ways, the love continued to be shown throughout the day. Thanks to generous donations from supporters, over 50 hygiene kits and toiletry bags are being given to patients during post-op care—simple but much-appreciated gifts that show each person they are seen, valued, and cared for.

The wheelchair clinic experienced a lighter day due to a bus cancellation that was supposed to bring at least 15 patients. Even so, the team used the extra time to assist a smaller morning group and prepare for the anticipated influx tomorrow.

As the day wrapped up, the final two surgical patients were wheeled into post-op at the same time. Even though we finished an hour earlier than yesterday, a few team members stayed behind once more to ensure that every patient was properly cared for. When they joined the group for dinner later, they were met with applause—a small gesture of gratitude for their continued dedication.

After dinner, we again went our separate ways to rest and reflect. Another long day behind us, and another one ahead.

Please continue to keep our volunteers and patients in your prayers. Every moment here matters—and your support means more than you know.
