Day 5
Sometimes the most life-changing moments don’t come from expensive equipment or perfectly planned solutions. Sometimes they come from compassion, teamwork, and a refusal to give up.
This week in Guatemala, our team met 19-year-old Tomás. His family had been told that we would not be able to help him with a wheelchair because he required a specialized chair with additional support for his head and trunk — something we simply did not have available.
For many families, that might have been the end of the conversation.
But not here.
With creativity, determination, and a whole lot of heart, volunteers and medical team members came together to find another way. Using pool noodles, zip ties, foam cushions, Velcro straps, a seatbelt, a footplate, and even a neck pillow, the team transformed a standard wheelchair into something designed specifically for Tomás’ needs.
And suddenly, everything changed.
What once required his sister to physically carry him from place to place became something much more manageable. For the first time, Tomás could sit supported and secure in a chair made just for him. The relief on his family’s faces was immediate. Smiles filled the room. Hope returned in a tangible way.
Moments like these remind us that medical missions are about so much more than surgeries and procedures. They are about restoring dignity, independence, and possibility. They are about seeing a need and refusing to walk away from it.
Tomás may have arrived believing there was no solution available for him, but he left surrounded by people who believed otherwise.
And today, because of a little ingenuity and a lot of love, one family’s daily life became just a little easier.
