Atilio Pérez: A Legacy of Service, Strength, and Hope
In Teculután, Zacapa, the name Atilio Pérez is recognized with admiration and affection.
Now 83 years old, Atilio is remembered as a celebrated soccer player and coach who proudly represented Guatemala. His influence on the field was so meaningful that the local stadium in Teculután was named in his honor. A lasting tribute to the legacy he built through talent, dedication, and love for the game.
But Atilio’s story did not end when he stepped away from the soccer field.
He continued serving his community through his work with the municipality, always ready to help others with the same humility and generosity that have defined his life. Even today, people light up when they see him. Many still ask to take a photo with the local legend, and Atilio is always willing to greet them with a smile.
Though he is admired by many, Atilio lives a quiet and simple life on his own. As getting around became more difficult, everyday activities such as visiting the market, spending time at the park, or simply moving freely through his community became harder.
That is why the gift of a wheelchair meant so much.
For Atilio, it is more than a piece of equipment. It is the opportunity to reconnect with the community he has loved and served for so many years. It is the freedom to go outside, visit familiar places, and continue enjoying the simple moments that bring meaning to each day.
Atilio has spent a lifetime giving to others as an athlete, a coach, a father, and a public servant. It was a privilege to give something back to him.
Through this wheelchair, Atilio received more than mobility. He received renewed independence, dignity, and the hope of continuing to enjoy life on his own terms.
His journey reminds us that every person deserves the freedom to move, participate, and remain connected to the people and places they love.
