Dr. Dawson and Dr. Harrington Awarded for Outstanding Care and Leadership

Recognizing Faith In Practice’s Orthopedic Surgeons for Outstanding Care and Leadership

Join us in congratulating Dr. Jack Dawson, Faith In Practice team leader and orthopedic surgeon, who recently received the Star Award for Excellence in Patient Care from Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston, Texas.

The Star Award recognizes BCM faculty who demonstrate outstanding clinical excellence, consistently high quality of patient care, professionalism, leadership, and continuous service to the Baylor community.

Dr. Dawson is an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and throughout more than a decade of practice, has treated over 10,000 fractures, with expertise spanning geriatric fractures, pelvic trauma, and complex multi-extremity injuries. Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Dawson plays a vital role in training the next generation of orthopedic surgeons and contributing to surgical education programs abroad.

In more than 15 years of service, Dr. Dawson has played an instrumental role in expanding Faith In Practice’s orthopedic program. In addition to leading an annual surgery trip, Dr. Dawson sits on the Orthopedic Quality Sub-Committee and serves as a mentor and leader for trauma surgeons who join Faith In Practice teams.

On his most recent trip with Faith In Practice, Dr. Dawson and BCM resident, Dr. Abdullah Ghali, completed 15 trauma surgeries at the Obras Hospital in Antigua. There were a variety of injuries, from old motor vehicle accidents with shifted or infected hardware, to tumors, to wounds from violence.

One patient came with a tibial plateau fracture that had never healed over a year after his initial injury. He was in constant pain and couldn’t walk or work. Dr. Dawson and Dr. Ghali performed a knee fusion to give him a functional leg to stand on, and by two days post-op day, he was already doing better. He will walk on that leg until he is ready for a knee replacement.

We are so grateful to Dr. Dawson for his heart for our mission and all he does for the people of Guatemala and join BCM in acknowledging his outstanding leadership and patient care.
