Day 1- Sunday, Aug 10th
What a great day!! Our morning began with a delightful breakfast buffet featuring an assortment of artfully prepared finger foods. Though I had left the welcoming dinner the night before feeling quite satisfied, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that my appetite quickly returned when faced with such an enticing selection. The presentation was as appealing as the flavors themselves, and each bite seemed to set the tone for the day ahead.
Following breakfast, our group set out for Jutiapa, a charming town located approximately three hours from Guatemala City. The drive provided the perfect opportunity for conversation, allowing us to begin forming connections that will no doubt strengthen over the course of the week. I had the good fortune of sitting next to Rodrigo, an interpreter whose wit, warmth, and lively personality made the journey pass quickly. His enthusiasm was infectious, and his skill in bridging language barriers was immediately apparent.
Upon arrival, we were met with the impressive sight of a U-Haul-style truck filled to capacity with equipment essential for our work this week. As we started to unload, a group of local residents joined us without hesitation or complaint. Their readiness to assist and their evident pride in contributing to our mission was truly humbling. Witnessing this spirit of collaboration and community was an inspiring moment that underscored the significance of our time here.
Once the truck was unloaded and our equipment organized, we checked into our hotel and prepared for the evening’s orientation. This session served not only to outline the logistical details of the days ahead, but also to deepen our understanding of the work we are here to accomplish. The orientation was immediately followed by a dinner that can only be described as exceptional — not a surprise whatsoever.
As the day came to a close, I was left with a profound sense of anticipation. My initial nerves remain, but they are now intertwined with a deep sense of excitement and purpose. If today was any indication of what lies ahead, I have no doubt that this week will be an extraordinary journey. Here’s to Team 875 and the people of Jutiapa!!
