DAY TWO
Healing a Voice
Four weeks prior to our arrival in Antigua, Dr. Austin King, an ENT from Abilene, Texas, met Sara, a beautiful 12-year-old girl with an extremely hoarse voice and difficulty breathing. Under anesthesia, Dr. King identified large, fleshy growths on Sara’s vocal cords almost completely blocking her airway. Removing these growths would require specialized equipment not available at the facility where Dr. King was working. Dr. King contacted Dr. Cary Moorhead and shared videos of her vocal cords so that Dr. Moorhead could arrange to bring down the equipment that he needed to remove the lesions. Sara and her grandmother traveled from one side of Guatemala to the other to see us for her surgery. Sara approached our pastor, Chris Seay, who was praying with other patients, and asked him to please pray for her. Dr. Moorhead performed the surgery the following day, and by the next morning Sara was breathing like a normal person and talking with a clearer voice. Sara and her grandmother were thankful of the teamwork between the doctors on different Faith in Practice teams who were able to coordinate a surgery that made this outcome possible.
