Day Two

This day could be described as nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, we were met with the warmth, humility, and genuine hospitality of the Guatemalan people. A local resident shared with us that Guatemala is often considered a community of “huggers”—a sentiment we quickly learned to be true. Every handshake was accompanied by a smile and every interaction left us feeling deeply welcomed.

Collin Prince, pediatric Nurse Practitioner reflected on the day with heartfelt admiration, “The difference between countries is astounding. The graciousness of the Guatemalan children warmed my heart—I was smiling all day.”

Personally, I was especially fortunate to spend a significant portion of my time with a six-year-old boy named Ángel. He approached me with the widest smile—just as seen in the first photograph—and with a shy but confident voice asked my name. From that moment, he remained by my side, following me as I documented the day through photographs. His childlike curiosity served as a gentle reminder of the connections that transcend language.

By midday, the physical toll of the work began to set in. The team faced an unexpected challenge due to a shortage of one provider. Yet, despite growing fatigue, a single glance at the line of hopeful patients—each with their own story, each waiting for care—was enough to renew our focus and energy.

MariCarmen, one of our dedicated local coordinators, shared her perspective on the day’s challenges with a brightening clarity, “My favorite part of the day was seeing everyone pull through with the same conviction as in the first hour of the day.”

Her words perfectly captured the spirit of the team—resilient, compassionate, and united in purpose. What began as a day of service quickly evolved into a day of profound connection, mutual respect, and shared humanity.

In the end, the day was highlighted by the connections we made. Smiles, handshakes, and shared determination carried us forward—proof that compassion crosses every border. I cannot wait to see what our team accomplishes tomorrow.
