Day Two – Surgery

Today was our first full day of surgeries—and it started early. Not too long after the sun rose, our team was already in motion; walking to the hospital, preparing operating rooms, reviewing charts, and getting ready to provide life-altering care to patients.

The first few cases always come with a learning curve; from getting familiar with the space, to syncing up as a team, moments of adjustment quickly became forward momentum.

Throughout the day, surgeries were performed on a tight schedule across multiple rooms—each one a step toward restoring health and quality of life for someone in Guatemala. We were able to follow 8 year old Sergio from Pre-Op all the way to his bed in the recovery ward. He suffered severe burns last year which caused a loss of mobility, and was here to undergo surgery to improve his quality of life as he continues to grow. We saw his mom take a breath of relief when she saw her only baby waking up after a successful surgery, and Sergio was all smiles and dimples when we visited him in the recovery ward. Our patients and their families have shown immense trust and gratitude, their strength and patience inspire us daily.

As we look ahead to the rest of the week, we carry the momentum of today’s successes and lessons learned along the way.

Thank you again to our donors— your impact is present in every surgery, every moment of connection, and every family’s sigh of relief.
