Day Two: Fresh Hope, Fresh Coffee, and God’s Love in Action

We began this morning with two of Guatemala’s greatest gifts—fresh, delicious coffee and a warm breakfast at our hotel. With full hearts (and full cups!), we gathered for our morning devotional, led by trip leader Kecia Jones, who guided us through Psalm 146.

One verse in particular stood out:
“He gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. The Lord frees the prisoners.”
—Psalm 146:7 (NLT)

Kecia shared how this verse has been meaningful to Free Wheelchair Mission founder, Don Schoendorfer. When Don speaks to churches, he often explains that lifting someone off the ground into a wheelchair is like freeing them from a prison, a life trapped without mobility. It was the perfect reminder of the sacred work ahead of us today: helping restore dignity and freedom through the generous support of our donors and the grace of God.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was meeting Pedro, 88, and his wife Jacinta, 83, from the mountainous region of Pulai. They arrived at the clinic with the help of a dear family friend and their grandson, Elwin. Pedro has experienced frequent falls, including a wrist fracture, due to instability and pain in his legs and back. After being assessed by our occupational therapist, Pedro was fitted with a new GEN_2 wheelchair and a cane since he can still walk short distances, this combination will offer him both safety and support.

Our team had the privilege of praying over Pedro and Jacinta, sharing a message of God’s deep love for them. We asked for healing, comfort, and that their new mobility aids would bring them not only relief from pain—but fresh hope and a brighter future.

Tomorrow, we’ll begin a new day—more wheelchairs, more hugs, and more moments of sacred connection as we continue to serve alongside our brothers and sisters at Faith in Practice.

It is an honor to be here in Guatemala, seeing firsthand how God is moving, one life, one wheelchair, and one prayer at a time.
