Walking in Love and Welcoming Patients – our Clinic doors are open, and we are ready to walk in love and serve each patient with kindness, love, and compassion.
Today is our first day of Clinic and Pastor Josef delivered an encouraging message. We were encouraged to embrace our gifts and skills we bring to Team 890. Transformations will happen this week by walking in love, caring for patients, and providing needed medical care to the Guatemalan community.
We arrived at the Clinic this morning to see a line of patients waiting at the door. They are happy to see us. You cannot help but notice the sweet elderly people in line. Most surrounded by family members and have traveled for hours to arrive early for medical care.
The “Blue Caps,” volunteers who partner with Family in Practice, identify and invite our patients. We also have the “Red Caps,” volunteers who serve to assist with movement through the Clinic and translation throughout their care, ready to serve and greeting us with smiles. ‘Red Caps” are young and typically in high school with goals of education in the medical field.
So many patients have a story, and I find it difficult to choose which to share. Every patient is important. Witnessing the medical care Faith in Practice is providing can be overwhelming with emotions. Team 890 is doing amazing work!
Today, I met a 15 year-old whose name is Carlos. He is here for a wheelchair. He has never been able to walk and, through Faith in Practice, will receive his third wheelchair. Imagine the burden lifted for his family. Carlos is here with his mother and brother. With the help of an interpreter, his mom was able to share with me they left their home at 3am in the morning to travel to the Clinic. She began to cry as she told me what her life had been like with her son’s inability to walk. Yes, I shed tears with her. The PT/OT working with him asked a wheelchair assembler to help adapt his new wheelchair for his special needs to provide a comfortable, safe mode of mobility. His mom cried (as well as the team members) when Carlos sat in his new wheelchair and smiled!
In the afternoon, a sweet elderly gentleman arrived, carried by his grandsons. His name is Felix and he is 88 years old. He fell about a year ago and fractured one of his legs. He no longer can walk, has difficulty hearing and vision loss. He is a precious man. We were able to provide a wheelchair to allow mobility and safety from future injuries. I will not forget his sweet face.
“Did we do enough?” We served, we showed compassion and kindness, and we changed lives today. At the end of the day, we were able to view a glorious sunset and the reminder to take a deep breath, reflect, and rest. We will start early again tomorrow.
Please continue to pray for our Team.
Much love from Estes Team 890,
