Day 3 – Feb 9
The morning devotional started with a reflection on the words of Saint Augustine, one of the earliest church fathers. Our challenge was for us to examine what is in our hearts, what it means to be the salt of the earth and to let our lights shine for others this week.
Our first day of surgery went as smoothly as we could have hoped for with six operating rooms staying busy and resulting in successful operations.
One of the first operations of the day was on a 4-year-old boy named Angel from Jalapa who had a club foot. The surgery was performed by Dr. Granberry with assistance from Shane Foss (scrub tech), Sara Guzman (anesthesia), Adriana Vides (nurse) and Estella Rincones (PACU.) Angel was accompanied by his mother, Darlin Yesica, who was incredibly nervous all morning and throughout his surgery. She was comforted by the warmth and support of Lucy Parker and Maria Vadillo who helped to calm her nerves, dry her tears, and provide assurance that Angel was in capable hands. Angel won the hearts of everyone who cared for him and, after a good, long nap in the PACU, could be found happily watching Paw Patrol by the afternoon in the recovery ward.
One of the most unique things about Faith in Practice is the continuity of care that we are able to provide to the patients that we treat. It’s such a comfort to the medical teams to know that the patients being operated on will have the ability to make follow-up appointments to receive the ongoing care that they need. In many cases, they can even be seen again by the same medical team that performed their surgery. Yesterday in clinic, Dr. Lorenzo Deveza saw Mario, a returning patient, who he operated on two years ago with Dr. Chappy Conrad and Priscilla Foss (anesthesia.) The case was a highly complex surgery called a hemipelvectomy, which involved removing a portion of the pelvis as well as a ewing sarcoma–a rare and aggressive cancer. To Dr. Deveza and Priscilla’s delight, Mario came for a follow-up this week and happily showed off how he could walk across the clinic floor.
