Wednesday marked the halfway point of our time here in Antigua. With surgeries underway across all four operating rooms, our team kept momentum strong—collaborating across specialties to serve the people of Guatemala with care and precision. From hernia repairs to hysterectomies to facial surgeries, the day was full.
One particularly meaningful case was the cleft palate revision for Nolvin, a young man in his early 20s who had cleft palate surgery in the past, but still had a hole in his palate affecting his eating. To imagine how this will improve his quality of life, is to remember exactly why this team shows up year after year. I also wanted to give a highlight to our new team members this year. They’ve stepped in seamlessly, bringing not only their skills but a sense of heart and purpose that’s made this week, and our team, stronger.
While the ORs stayed busy, a small group returned to Casa de Fe to continue supporting patients and their families. They spent the morning folding laundry, chopping vegetables, and visiting with those who are either healing or preparing for the days ahead. It’s been moving to witness how patients care for one another—cheering each other on, sharing space, and building a kind of temporary family.
Sergio, an 8-year-old patient that I mentioned earlier in the week, is still recovering in our hospital ward. Before he goes home, he is returning to Casa de Fe—not just to rest, but because so many patients asked to see him again after his surgery. The community they’ve built in such a short time is a reflection of both the culture of Guatemala as a whole, and also the strength of the individuals we’re honored to serve.
Some of our team members, myself included, have been dealing with illness. I spent part of the day receiving fluids and care from my own teammates. Being on the receiving end of that support offered a new perspective of how deeply this mission is rooted in presence, compassion, and stepping up for one another. Whether it’s in an operating room, a kitchen, or a quiet moment of rest, each of us plays a role in making this work possible.
Thank you again to our donors—you make each of these roles possible. Your support helps us come together, so we can keep showing up fully for the people we serve.
