The Power Behind the Mission: Estelita and Gervasio
Gervasio and Estelita are a couple from the Department of Totonicapán, in the southwestern region of the country. Thanks to this pair of volunteer leaders, many people in their community have received healing and life-changing medical care. Leaders like Gervasio and Estelita serve as an essential link between local communities and villages in Guatemala and Faith in Practice. For 18 years, they have served with passion, dedication, and commitment. They have a team made up of four volunteer leaders from their area, and together they work hard to recruit patients for the medical clinic team before the trip, assist with the clinic flow and logistics during the mission week, and accompany patients to Antigua or Retalhuleu for their surgery.
In August 2025, Estelita experienced health problems and spent a long time hospitalized and immobilized. Estelita affirms that, just like the patients, she too has been healed. She is a witness that God still has plans for her and her family. At the 2025 Volunteer Leaders Conference, Estelita shared, “My greatest strength is Faith in Practice, and God keeps me standing to continue being an instrument of service and love for others.”
The volunteer leaders provide incredible support to patients throughout an unfamiliar and vulnerable experience. Without the dedication and hard work of leaders like Gervasio and Estelita, the continuity of care that Faith In Practice provides our patients would not be possible. Their steadfast faith and heart for the mission is an inspiration for all of us, and we are so grateful for all that they do.
