Patient Story – Darwin

Darwin’s Story: Hope on Wheels

Darwin arrived at the Thompson Medical Clinic Team’s’ mobility clinic in Poptún, Petén, smiling and greeting everyone he passed. His smile was warm and full of life, the kind that instantly brightens the room. He lives in the Ishobel neighborhood with his parents, María and Darwin, and his two younger siblings, Dariana and Francisco. As the oldest of three, he has always been closely connected to his family and plays an important role in their everyday life.

Darwin was born with spina bifida and was able to walk until he was three, when he became dependent on a wheelchair. Even with the challenges he has faced, he carries himself with optimism and joy. He attends school on the weekends and helps around the house during the week. He loves spending time with his siblings and with Tito, his dog, who is always by his side.

Darwin had been using the same wheelchair for many years, until it no longer met his needs. For his mother, María, receiving a new wheelchair was a moment full of meaning. This chair is more than just a way to get around. It gives Darwin independence, allows him to take part in family life, and helps him live with dignity. Seeing him comfortably fitted in his new chair brought relief, gratitude, and hope for the future.

This life-changing work is made possible through Faith In Practice’s partnership with Free Wheelchair Mission. Together, we are able to bring real hope and lasting impact to people who have waited years for the gift of mobility.

Darwin and his family left the clinic full of gratitude, thankful to God and to all the volunteers who made this day possible. His smile stayed with our team long after he rolled away, a quiet reminder of why this work matters and the difference a wheelchair can make in someone’s life.
