Emily Berend Adult Reconstruction Symposium Keynote Speaker – Brian Parsley, MD
Our long-time mission team leader and Board Member, Dr. Brian Parsley, was invited to attend and present as the keynote speaker at the 16th Annual Emily Berend Adult Reconstruction Symposium held in April at Duke University in Durham, NC. Orthopedic surgeons from across the country, most of whom were Duke University School of Medicine alumni, attended this two-day event. The symposium was named in honor of the late mother of Dr. Mike Berend and Dr. Keith Berend, both of whom are highly involved and well-respected Faith In Practice volunteers and mission team leaders. Dr. Mike and Julie Berend will serve as chairs of the upcoming ‘Known and Loved’ annual celebration, recognizing orthopedics and orthopedic surgeons as an integral component of Faith In Practice.
At the symposium, Dr. Parsley presented the importance of medical mission work that brings value not only to the patients served, but also profoundly impacts the doctors and surgeons. Dr. Parsley shared that, “Mission work gets you back to the basics of health care and why most of us chose this path in the first place. The compassion, skill sets, and values you’ve developed become your greatest offering – and the blessings you receive in return are far greater than any dollar amount.” He spoke of the life-changing impact of serving in Guatemala and reflected on decades of experiences that were made possible through service with Faith In Practice.
Dr. Parsley has served with Faith In Practice since 1998, and through the years has changed myriad lives with his talent, skills, and compassion for helping those in need. Not only has he served as a mission team leader and lead surgeon on multiple missions each year, but he has also inspired countless other surgeons, doctors, nurses, and non-medical individuals to join Faith In Practice and grow the impact of the organization. Dr. Parsley also serves as a valuable member and leader of the Orthopedic sub-committee, which has been instrumental in growing and improving the Orthopedic program at Faith In Practice in recent years. Dr. Parsley continues to embody the words he spoke at the symposium, and we are blessed to have his ongoing presence and expertise for years to come.
