Day 3 –Tuesday
Today was our second full day of surgeries. The rhythm of the day was much like yesterday, patients arriving early, busy operating rooms, and families waiting patiently as their loved ones underwent procedures they had often been waiting years to receive. While the schedule looked familiar, every patient and every conversation made the day meaningful.
One of the highlights of the day was meeting a man who now works alongside Faith In Practice. He shared that 23 years ago, he developed a tumor on his face and was introduced to an American couple volunteering in Guatemala, who helped him complete the paperwork to receive care and introduced him to this hospital. Once he arrived at the hospital, he met Dr.Young, who ran the eye clinic and not only treated him, but also provided the financial support that made his care possible. Over the course of five reconstructive surgeries, doctors used skin grafts from different parts of his body to gradually rebuild his face.
He told us that after everything he experienced, he felt called to help others. Today, he works with Faith In Practice, helping connect patients with the hospital and guiding them through the process of receiving care. He shared that he believes God allowed him to go through those difficult experiences so that he could help other people, finding a purpose through his suffering. Having the chance to hear his story come to a full circle was incredibly moving.
Later in the day, we made rounds and spent time talking with patients and their families. Being able to hear their stories, answer questions, and simply spend time with them has become one of the most meaningful parts of the week. These conversations are a reminder that while surgeries restore health, compassion and human connection are just as important in the healing process.
As we wrapped up another day, we were grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside such an incredible team and look forward to continuing the work tomorrow.
