Day 5 – Wednesday: The Road to Recovery
While surgery can change a patient’s life in a single day, healing continues long after they leave the operating room. Today, we had the privilege of witnessing one of the most rewarding parts of the recovery process as patients began physical therapy. It was inspiring to watch individuals who had surgery just a day before take their first steps toward greater strength, mobility, and independence.
Recovery is not easy, and every exercise requires determination, patience, and perseverance. One of our physical therapists shared something that stood out throughout the day: despite the discomfort that naturally comes with recovery, our patients are in incredibly high spirits. Many are eager to get out of bed, begin walking, and push through each therapy session because they know every step is bringing them closer to the life they have been hoping for.
Their excitement about what lies ahead often outweighs the pain they are feeling in the moment. Watching them choose hope over fear and determination over discomfort is a powerful reminder that healing is about more than surgery, it is also about the strength of the human spirit.
One patient who especially inspired our team was Rolando Barahona Díaz, who traveled nearly 12 hours from Petén to receive care. After learning about the program through a local coordinator, he made the long journey with the hope of finding relief from the chronic pain in both of his knees.
Rolando shared that he had previously undergone hip surgery last year, and this week he received bilateral knee replacement surgery. Although recovery has not been easy, he said each day brings a little less pain and a little more progress. With the support of the physical therapy team, he remains determined to work through every exercise, knowing that each step brings him closer to regaining his independence.
When asked about his experience, Rolando smiled and described the care he has received as “excellent.” He spoke with deep appreciation for the medical team and the opportunity to receive treatment. More than anything, he is excited to return to the activities he enjoys most. He looks forward to riding his bicycle again, climbing stairs without debilitating knee pain, and simply being able to get on and off a bus with ease, things that had become incredibly difficult before surgery. His excitement for the future is contagious, reminding us that these surgeries do much more than relieve pain. They restore freedom, confidence, and the opportunity to enjoy everyday life again.
Stories like Rolando’s remind us that this mission is about much more than surgery. It is about restoring independence, renewing hope, and giving patients the opportunity to return to their families and communities with a better quality of life. Every member of the team, from surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and physical therapists to translators, volunteers, and local staff plays an important role in making that possible.
As we continue through the week, we remain inspired by the resilience of our patients and grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside them during their recovery. Watching them take their first steps, filled with determination and hope for the future, reminds us that healing is not only measured by successful surgeries but also by the courage to keep moving forward. We look forward to witnessing many more stories of hope in the days ahead.
