Day 3
“For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’”
Matthew 25:35-36
Listening to the birds chirping as I reflect on today, the patients, families, caregivers, and volunteers. I think about how truly amazing it is for people to come together with one common goal – the desire to see each person’s quality of life improve.
I’m touched by the patients who came to see us. With the need great and demand high, each patient and family waited patiently for their turn. And when they were met by their physician, therapist, and pharmacist, they were nothing short of pleasant and grateful. Today I heard, “God is good, and God bless you all” with the patient’s arms lifted giving God praise. Getting a wheelchair, walker, cane, or crutches is an answered prayer for many.
A family had been on the waitlist for a special pediatric wheelchair. It was given to an energetic 5 year old little boy whose family traveled two hours to get to the clinic. He smiled the entire time, gave out fist bumps, and to see him go in his brand new wheelchair – what a sight! His mom said this was the first time she’s been able to get help for him since birth was very happy.
We met the caregiver of a 92-year-old patient who was blind and deaf. The patient didn’t have family, but this caregiver’s heart was soft. I observed her brush her hair gently as her new wheelchair was prepared for her.
When we help care for people, we become the hands and feet of Jesus. Care can be a smile, and hug, or mobility support equipment like what is being provided while we are here. Regardless of the “things,” never forget that what we may see as small, is a blessing or a miracle in the eyes of someone else.
When did you last ask, who can I help today?
